How Large Can a RAR File Be?

RAR archives can theoretically be enormous, but real-world limits usually come from your file system, storage space, and patience, not the format itself.

Theoretical format limits

The RAR5 format (the current RAR archive version) supports very large archive and file sizes, well beyond what most users will ever create. In practice, no one runs into the RAR format's own theoretical ceiling — other constraints show up first.

File system limits

File systemMaximum single file size
FAT324 GB per file
NTFSEffectively no practical limit for typical use
exFATEffectively no practical limit for typical use
APFSEffectively no practical limit for typical use

Volume splitting for large sets

When an archive would exceed a file system limit, an upload cap, or is just unwieldy to move as one file, splitting into volumes breaks it into fixed-size parts. All parts are needed together to extract. See multi-part RAR files for how that works in practice.

Memory and time considerations

Very large archives take longer to compress and extract, and higher compression levels or larger dictionary sizes increase memory use during both creation and extraction. If a system has limited RAM, extremely large archives with high compression settings may be slow or, in constrained environments, fail.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a maximum size for a RAR file?

The RAR5 format supports very large sizes with no practical ceiling for typical use. Real limits usually come from your file system or destination, not the format.

Why can't I save a large RAR file to my USB drive?

If the drive is formatted as FAT32, it caps individual files at 4 GB, regardless of how large RAR itself can technically go. Reformatting to exFAT or NTFS removes that cap.

How do I send a RAR file larger than an upload limit?

Split it into volumes when creating the archive, so each part is under the limit. See [multi-part RAR files](/multi-part-rar-files).

Does a bigger archive take longer to create?

Yes, both size and compression level affect how long creation and extraction take, and memory use rises with larger dictionary settings.
