Windows 11 now opens RAR natively
A Windows 11 update added native support for RAR, 7z, and several other archive formats directly in File Explorer, using the open-source libarchive library. This means you can double-click a RAR file and browse or extract its contents on an up-to-date Windows 11 system without installing anything. This is different from Windows 10, where Explorer cannot open RAR files at all.
What Windows 11's built-in support doesn't do
- It can extract RAR archives, but it cannot create new RAR archives — RAR creation still requires RARLAB's own tools.
- It has no password-protection or archive-repair features.
- It doesn't handle multi-part/split RAR volumes the way a dedicated archiver does — see multi-part RAR files.
